The neighbourhood
You stay in Petrópolis, one of Natal’s most traditional and elegant neighbourhoods, between the historic centre and the sea. Tree-lined streets, chef-led restaurants and real neighbourhood life.
A few steps from the building is Largo do Atheneu, facing the Atheneu Norte-Riograndense school, founded in 1834 and one of the oldest public schools in Brazil. The square gathers bars, restaurants and open-air fairs, and it traditionally opens Natal’s Carnival with the Baile das Máscaras.
In the late afternoon the sun sets over the Potengi River, one of the finest sights in the city, seen from the balcony.

Founded on Christmas Day 1599 at the mouth of the Potengi River, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte is known as the City of the Sun: warm sea, dunes, cliffs and a historic centre that begins at the Forte dos Reis Magos.
Epiphany: work begins on the Forte dos Reis Magos at the mouth of the Potengi River.
The city is founded on Christmas Day, which gives it its name.
The Atheneu Norte-Riograndense school is founded and later names the square.
Cidade Nova, Natal’s third official district and the origin of Petrópolis and Tirol, is laid out.
The X-shaped building that now houses the Atheneu opens, facing the square.
The Newton Navarro Bridge spans the Potengi: 1,781 m long with a 212 m main span.
